Key Points
Moisture and dirt accelerate the deterioration of our tents. Mildew forms with a minimum of moisture, compromises waterproofing, and permanently ruins the tent.
Troop 12 tents are donated or purchased through fundraising events. Proper care of our troop tents is the responsibility of our Scouts and will increase service life.
At the end of each field event a Scout will be assigned with taking the tent home, maintaining it, and returning it to the Troop Quartermaster in a condition ready for next use.
Maintenance Steps
Upon return from a trip immediately (same day) unfurl the tent and ground cloth, and allow to dry:
Set up on a dry deck or patio. Grass is OK but see Item 8. OR
Hang up in a dry and/or dehumidified basement or garage.
Wipe tent stakes clean.
Wipe bags clean: tent bag, pole bag, stake bag.
When fully dry, shake out the tent body and clear out all trash, leaves, and other debris.
Brush and wipe off all remaining dirt and mud with a damp cloth or non-abrasive sponge.
Allow all components to fully dry, including poles and stakes
Conduct inventory check of damaged or missing elements:
Tent stakes
Guy lines
Malfunctioning zippers
When all elements are completely dry (ensure all ground moisture is removed from tent elements if it has been set up in the yard), repack tent and components into tent bag.
Return the packed tent to the Troop Quartermaster, and attach a note with any components requiring attention from step 7.
Return in time for the planning session of the next Troop field trip.
Thank you!
